Post-Holiday Party Carpet Cleaning Tips

The holidays are a special time for dinners, parties, and other special gatherings with family and friends. However, if you're the host of one of these celebrations, you may not have as much holiday cheer as your guests. Once the food and drink are finished and your last guest is headed out the door, you'll likely find yourself with a very dirty carpet.

Fortunately, there are some actions you can take to keep your carpets clean even after the holiday revelry. The experts at Zerorez® have compiled some carpet cleaning tips for those post-party messes:

Vacuum Your Carpets ASAP

After your party, it's important to vacuum up food particles before they become deeply embedded in your carpeting. The longer debris remains in the carpet fibers, the better the chance it could turn into mold or bacteria. Vacuum in the direction of the pile. Place a nylon stocking over the attachment nozzle to prevent the carpet fringe from getting sucked up or damaged.

For a smaller rug, dust it with a soft brush outdoors. Keep in mind that dirt tracked in by your guests can get into the rug's backing, so be sure to vacuum both the front and back.

Remove Stains

During your party, there are bound to be messes or spills that could put your coveted carpet in danger. The key is to try and clean up the mishap as quickly as possible. If a spill remains on your carpet for a long time, it can turn into a stain. The morning after the party, spring into action by gathering your cleaning supplies and scanning your carpet for any unwanted spots and stains.

To help prevent permanent stains on your carpet, here are some common types of party stains and how to remove them:

Red Wine

Out of all types of stains that could happen during a holiday party, wine stains on carpet is by far one of the most common. Wine is a great beverage to have at parties but all it takes is an exaggerated gesture or an innocent bump for a red wine spill to end up on your carpet.

The best advice is to tend to the stain the second it happens. Blot the stain with a clean cloth, then mix a cleaning solution of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. To lift the stain from the fibers, blot the stain with a sponge and cleaning solution. Once the wine is removed, rinse the area with warm water and then blot dry. If the stain dries and sets into your carpet, you'll need to get it professionally cleaned.

Candle Wax

Holiday-scented candles are a festive way to spread the holiday aroma for your party. However, at a party there is a chance a candle could get knocked over and wax could end up on your carpet. It's easier to remove candle wax once it's dried (unlike wine spills). Scrape off as much wax as you can with a knife, then lay paper towels on the remaining wax. Use an iron, set on low to medium heat, over the towels to melt the wax. The paper towels should absorb the newly heated wax, making clean up a breeze.

Lipstick

Maybe someone fell and smudged lipstick on your carpet or dropped a tube by accident, but either case, the lipstick on your carpet needs to be removed to avoid permanent staining. Blot the stain dry with a clean paper towel, followed by blotting with a dry-cleaning solution. A little rubbing alcohol can also be applied to a clean paper towel can be used to blot up the lipstick

Schedule a Deep Cleaning

After your holiday gathering, make sure to perform a deep cleaning of your carpet. To achieve the deepest clean possible, schedule an appointment with a professional carpet cleaner. We recommend a thorough cleaning every 12 to 18 months, as well as after special events such as a holiday gathering.
